Talk to Her

Spanish Language Film Series Talk to Her (2002) Directed by Pedro Almodóvar A travel writer’s burgeoning relationship with a famed female matador is violently interrupted when she falls into a coma after a bullring tragedy, and while waiting at her hospital bedside, he meets a male nurse keeping a similar vigil over a comatose ballet dancer. Only Almodóvar could come up with such a deliciously ridiculous premise for a film, and only Almodóvar could make it into a melodrama of unusual emotional power. “The most mature work this director has ever brought to the screen… [has] the freakish, elegant calm of early Tennessee Williams.”—The New York Times This film is being presented as part of KinoSaito’s Spanish Language Film series, and will be introduced by Agustín Zarzosa with a facilitated Q&A discussion to follow. Agustín Zarzosa is Associate Professor and Chair of Cinema Studies at SUNY Purchase, where he teaches courses on Mexican cinema, melodrama, and the films of Pedro Almodóvar. His book, Refiguring Melodrama in Film and Television: Captive Affects, Elastic Sufferings, Vicarious Objects, has been published by Lexington Books. He is currently completing a manuscript titled The Sordid Image: The Cinema of Arturo Ripstein and Paz Alicia Garciadiego.
