A day dedicated to political cartoons, with panels, workshops, debates, and the Award Ceremony of the European Cartoon Award 2024! 

The program of the ECA 2024 'Cartoons Day'!

The main theme of this edition will be polarization: We live in a world where positions and opinions are becoming increasingly polarized. Wars and disasters, and the effect of social media on the public sphere, generate a climate of anger, making it difficult to discuss important matters. This situation affects editorial cartoonists as well. They have to deal with controversies, online hate, job insecurity, and real threats to their safety. And yet, their cartoons have never been so popular, traveling the world and going viral very easily. Why is that so?

15:25-16:15 (Podium B):POLARIZATION AND POLITICAL CARTOONS
The opening roundtable of the day, to talk about polarization and its effects on political cartoons and public discourse. With Professor Mark Boukes (UvA), Sanaz Bagheri (cartoonist), Ben Jennings (cartoonist), Eva Hartog (Politico). Moderated by Catherine André (ECA Panel of Judges Chair)

16:30-17:15 (Podium B):THE EDITORS' CHOICE
How do editors choose political cartoons? With Danusia Schenke (Trouw), Lotfi El Hamidi (NRC), Tjeerd Royaards (cartoonist). Moderated by Gian-Paolo Accardo (Voxeurop)

17:30-18:15 (Breakout room):DEFENDING CARTOONISTS' SAFETY. HOW TO COPE AND WHO CAN HELP
A workshop dedicated to political cartoonists to give them tools to be safe in the offline/online space. With Terry Anderson (Cartoonists Rights), Alina Toropova (ECPMF), Yuri Marchenko (Media Defence)

17:30-18:30 (Podium B):LET'S DRAW! (WORKSHOP ON EDITORIAL CARTOONS)
A deep dive into the history of Dutch political cartoons with Jop Euwijk (Beeld & Geluid) and a hands-on drawing session with Maarten Wolterink (cartoonist)

18:45-19:15 (Podium B):INKTSPOTPANEL
An all-star panel from Pers & Prent’s Inktspotprijs! Gijs Wouda (journalist), Jip van den Toorn (cartoonist), Hajo de Reijger (cartoonist, winner of the Inktspotprijs 2024), and Jop Euwijk (Pers & Prent)

19:15-20:00 (bar):FOOD AND DRINKS
A light meal, in preparation for the Award Ceremony!

20:00-21:15 (Podium B):AWARD CEREMONY OF THE ECA 2024
Announcement of the ECA Junior Award, and the Winners of the European Cartoon Award 2024. Many special guests, and lots of amazing cartoons!

21:00-onwards (Bar): DRINKS AND NETWORKING
With live music!
