Artist(s) unknown (Japan), 'Biwa', 19th century, lacquered wood with ivory, mother-of-pearl, sharkskin and silk strings, height: 32 inches. A type of lute, this Japanese biwa is one of only a handful of musical instruments in the DAI collection. It has cracks running along the seams between wood pieces on the face, where the lacquer has started to chip away. There is also old, discolored past conservation in these areas. Other issues include gaps between wood seams on the soundboard and neck as well as several losses in the applied lacquer design, especially the wings of butterflies. Conservation treatment will include: cleaning surfaces; consolidating cracks and reducing gaps; and filling lacquer losses and inpainting to match surrounding designs.
