As part of Democracy on Screen, the monthly documentary and conversation series by French in Motion, organized in partnership with NYU&rsquo;s John Brademas Center, we are pleased to present a special screening of DISSIDENTS. The screening will be followed by a conversation with director and producer Yi Chen and national security and technology expert Bill Drexel. This film follows three Chinese dissidents in the United States as they continue their fight for democracy. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Juntao Wang, a leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and head of the Democratic Party of China in exile, faces repeated attacks from pro-Beijing groups. Artist Weiming Chen, known for his politically charged sculptures, has been surveilled and seen his work destroyed. Meanwhile, asylum seeker Chunyan Wang, forced into exile after losing her home, risks arrest as she confronts Chinese officials during U.S.&ndash;China trade talks. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Through intimate footage and investigative storytelling, the film exposes how far China&rsquo;s repression reaches, well beyond its own borders. Yi ChenYi Chen is an award-winning documentary filmmaker based in the United States. FIRST VOTE (2020 AFI DOCS, PBS Distribution) qualified for the 93rd Academy Awards in the &quot;Best Picture&quot; and &quot;Documentary Feature&quot; categories. The film won a Telly Award and Special Jury Award at the 36th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. DISSIDENTS (2024 Berlinale EFM, Java Films) had its international premiere at the Academy Awards-qualifying Doc Edge Festival in New Zealand. Yi holds an MFA in Film and Media Arts from American University. Dr. Charles Austin JordanDr. Charles Austin Jordan is an expert on China&#39;s political economy and international relations. His research focuses on the role and growth of Party organizations in China&#39;s private economy, state-business relations in China since 1978, and international trade. He is currently a Senior Research Analyst at Rhodium Group, where he advises public sector clients on China&#39;s macroeconomy and foreign economic policy. He is an adjunct faculty member at NYU Washington, and previously served as a Princeton in Asia Fellow in Japan. He holds a PhD in political science from Harvard University and a BA in China &amp; Asia Pacific studies and mathematics from Cornell University. He is professionally fluent in Mandarin Chinese. Bill DrexelBill Drexel&nbsp;is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, where he focuses on US-India relations, artificial intelligence competition with China, and technology in American grand strategy. He played a key role in the successful campaign to secure the release of his father-in-law, Pastor Ezra Jin&mdash;one of China&rsquo;s most prominent prisoners of conscience&mdash;between 2025 and 2026.
