Sukanya Burman Dance and the New Neighbors Coalition fondly invite the community to a Diwali Celebration on Monday, November 9 from 6:00&ndash;8:00 p.m. in the Undercroft of St. Luke&rsquo;s Episcopal Church. Diwali, from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning &ldquo;row of lights,&rdquo; is a five-day holiday celebrated across different faiths and traditions, including Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Often known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali celebrates themes of light over darkness, hope, renewal, freedom, and enlightenment. This year&rsquo;s celebration will offer several opportunities to experience and learn about Diwali traditions together. Guests will be invited to decorate their own Dandiya sticks, which are traditionally used in celebratory folk dancing, before having the opportunity to put them to use during Dandiya and Garba dancing later in the evening. No previous dance experience is necessary, and participants of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to join in. The evening will also feature a hands-on laddu-making lesson, where participants can learn how to make the traditional Indian sweet often prepared and shared during celebrations and special occasions. There will also be a short conversation about the meaning and traditions of Diwali, all enjoyed alongside chai, build-your-own chaat, samosas, and sweets. A henna artist will also be available to create temporary henna designs for guests.
