Houston has plenty of rabbit holes. This package is four of them, with a hotel bed in the middle.
Two passes to Meow Wolf’s Radio Tave. Picture a radio station knocked into another dimension and dropped in the Fifth Ward, the neighborhood that gave us the Geto Boys. More than 100 artists, about half of them Texans, built the maze: hidden doors, portals, puzzles. It’s Meow Wolf’s most sound-driven exhibit yet, with Fat Tony on the soundtrack and a jukebox full of Houston musicians.
$100 at My Flaming Heart. Judy Masliyah’s Mid Main shop is where vintage cowboy boots, handmade pin-up dresses, Mexican folk art, jewelry by local makers, and a box of antique doll heads all live together and somehow make sense. Spend the hundred on boots. Dolly would approve.
Two nights at the Heights House Hotel. It started in the 70s as a motel called the Astro Inn. Now it’s a boutique hotel with mid-century furniture, a pool, a big courtyard, a firepit, and free breakfast.
Dinner and drinks at Soluna, the hotel’s poolside restaurant and bar. The name is Spanish for sun and moon, and the kitchen runs from breakfast tacos to late night. Think al pastor tacos, chicharrones and queso, a chicken milanese torta, and frozen margaritas, all from the owner of Betelgeuse Betelgeuse.
Fall down the rabbit hole, come up in Houston.

Created by internationally acclaimed artist and author David Hayward (known globally as NakedPastor), "Sophia Suspended" is one of the most celebrated and beloved pieces in his iconic Sophia collection.
The print depicts Sophia lying peacefully in a hammock slung between two evergreen trees under the glowing silhouette of a full moon. On closer reflection, a profound detail emerges: one tree is thriving with life, while the other is standing bare. Suspended gracefully between the two, Sophia embodies the delicate, beautiful state of living between endings and beginnings, light and dark, life and transformation.
In Hayward’s art, Sophia’s face is intentionally obscured—because she represents all of us. Her journey is a universal story of courage, vulnerability, resilience, and finding quiet freedom right in the middle of life's transitions.
An 8.5 x 10” print encased in a metallic silver frame. A clean graphite sketch mixed with watercolor of a woman hanging from a hammock, suspended by two fir trees with a full moon in the background. Grayscale.

An abstract 18x24 acrylic painting that blends shades of neutral brown, cool blues, and warm teals, painted with Andrew Lewis Hopkins. Andrew's original abstract artwork on his website (https://andrewlewishopkinsart.com/) routinely sells for $2,000 to $4,000+. Listen to how Andrew describes his artwork and process:
"My work is an ongoing negotiation between rigid discipline and absolute fluid freedom. As a U.S. Army Infantry combat veteran and special operations combat medic, I spent years operating in high-stakes environments governed by strict mechanics, intense leverage, and rapid calculation.
When I transitioned to the canvas and the page, those internal forces evolved into a dual pursuit of raw emotional truth and meticulous structure.
I approach both poetry and abstract acrylic painting not as separate mediums, but as the same vital expression utilizing different tools. My poetry has commanded top-tier recognition across distinct competitive landscapes, securing first place in the Diamond Quill and placing second place along with multiple runner-up honors on Poetry.com.
My text wrestles with deep, complex human realities: intellectual isolation, moral philosophy, and psychological resilience. Where the words end, the pigments take over.
Visually, my art relies on an uncompromising, high-complexity technical process. I build vibrant, multi-layered abstract landscapes using up to ten distinct colors simultaneously, deliberately forcing flats to interact with heavy metallic iridescents. The challenge is mechanical: keeping this dense palette completely brilliant from corner to corner without letting the pigments muddle into gray.
By leveraging precise chemistry and fluid mechanics, I create defined cells and sudden lacing effects that pull the viewer’s eye across the entire surface.
There are no safe, boring, or calm spaces on my canvases; every square inch demands attention. To look at a piece like Metallic Adventure or Nebulous Noir is to view a psychological landscape. My original physical paintings and custom commissions represent the convergence of a soldier's focus, a poet's introspection, and an artist's fierce, unapologetic drive to capture the cosmos out of chaos."

Two framed wildflower photographs from Mosaic Art & Home on Main Street in Smithville: an 18x20 close-up of tropical pink blooms and a 20x16 shot of pink and yellow wildflowers in a southern field. Bloom where you’re planted, as they say, which suits a community garden event.
Jeri and Walter Winslett opened Mosaic after the 2011 Bastrop County Complex fire destroyed their home. It’s grown into a gallery full of Bastrop County artists, with everything from furniture to pottery to paintings. It's because of them and Mosaic that these two were generously donated and paired together.

8x10, in a mint green wooden frame.
Amber is a graphic designer and the President of the Pride Community Center, which has been building community in the Brazos Valley since 2010. She donated this digital painting through her business, Snow & Flair Creative Services: hot air balloons floating through a bright blue sky, each one painted as a different Pride flag.
Call it a community in the sky. No two balloons look alike, none of them is rising alone, and there’s room up there for every last one. This is what that looks like when everybody pitches in.

John is a Smithville artist who spent years as a woodworker before abstract painting took over. He’s made around 70 paintings in the last three years, teaches abstract classes, and has shown in galleries around Texas, including Austin Fine Art Gallery. He's also heavily involved with the Lost Pines Artisans Alliance, encouraging those in his community to create and express themselves as well.
“A Rose For A Tribute” started with a hundred-year-old hooked rug that had worn down until nearly all its color and detail was gone. What was left looked like an Art Deco abstract to John, so he painted it back to life. The rug’s maker is unknown and the rug itself is too far gone to restore, so the painting is how it gets remembered. A tribute means giving something, so John gave back the rose.

This hand-painted original comes from College Station artist J. Vincent Scarpace, who’s best known for his abstract fish, so consider it a big catch.
His take: everybody goes through the struggle before success, “however it’s best defined for you, by you.” For him the piece is an awakening out of the fog, and he points out that the struggle is where we learn the most. We know a little about that around here.
