Duck Detectives Ages 5–12 · Wednesdays, November 4, 11 & 18 · 1–3 PM · East End Seaport Museum, Greenport Every November, ducks arrive in Greenport Harbor to spend the winter, and their bodies are built for life on cold water. In this three-part drop-off program, students explore real bird specimens, try hands-on activities with CI Bird Sanctuary educators, and head out to the marina with binoculars to watch winter ducks up close. Each session focuses on one adaptation: bills, feet, or feathers and wings. Every session stands on its own, so join us for one, two, or all three. Students are grouped by age (5–8 and 9–12), so everyone learns at the right level. We go outside rain or shine, so please dress your child for the weather. Bills · Wednesday, November 4 · 1–3 PM How can you tell what a duck eats just by looking at its bill? Students examine real bird skulls, test how different bill shapes gather food, and watch winter ducks at the marina to see those bills at work. Feet · Wednesday, November 11 · 1–3 PM Why can some ducks waddle along the dock while others can barely stand? Students investigate webbed feet and leg placement with real specimens, then watch ducks dive, paddle, and take off from the harbor. Feathers and Wings · Wednesday, November 18 · 1–3 PM How does a duck stay warm and dry on freezing water? Students explore waterproofing, insulation, and wing shape with real specimens and experiments, then head outside to watch ducks preen and cormorants dry their wings.
