Joining forces from Mexico to Chicago, the women behind Masa Madre are bringing Monica Unikel, for a fascinating talk, while raising funds for the Chicago Abortion Fund.
Monica Unikel, top Historian of Jewish immigration to Mexico City, and the mother of Tamar (Masa Madre co-owner), has been organizing monthly walks through La Merced, Mexico City’s immigrant quarter of the early 20th century, for more than 20 years. From the 1920s through the end of WWII, a steady influx of Eastern European, Syrian, and Sephardic Jews—including Unikel’s family—came to Mexico, escaping anti-Semitism and war. They did not bring much with them, but their recipes and flavors traveled well. Their encounters with Mexican food and their struggles to keep their traditions alive are captivating stories.
