STUDENT CHORUS MEMBERS and PEER LEADERS
What is HXN?
Harmony Explosion North (HXN) South Shore provides top-notch vocal coaching and choral instruction for all high-school aged singers in one dynamic, FUN event! Music teachers are invited too! (See below)
Student Campers will:
- Enjoy a day singing with other students who share their interest in music
- Have the opportunity to bring a friend with them and/or make new ones at camp
- Experience the thrill of singing a cappella, 4-part, close harmony best known as Barbershop - perhaps for the first time
- Learn how to be a better singer and performer under the leadership of a nationally recognized Music Educator
- Perform on a live, Saturday evening show with lots of students and adults who enjoy harmony singing
- Have a chance to interact and learn from a skilled training quartet
Our camp offers an all-voice chorus experience for young singers. The HXNE chorus will sing a cappella, close harmony, in four voice parts. The music will include vocal ranges that align with traditional choir roles such as soprano, alto, tenor and bass (SATB).
Each singer will receive downloadable digital copies of the sheet music and quality learning tracks for their part of each song in advance. Students should put in effort prior to the camp getting familiar with the songs on their own or with the help of their music teacher.
The HXNE student experience includes:
- professional singing instruction in the chorus throughout the day,
- lunch and dinner, and
- the opportunity to perform on the Saturday evening show.
There is no “out of pocket” expense for high school students or peer leaders to attend. Parents and friends are encouraged to purchase a Saturday Evening Show ticket so they can enjoy how much their kids have learned and experienced.
So, how do we make the camp FREE?
As you can imagine, there is a significant cost to producing this incredible event. We have a large base of donors who support this camp because they believe it is important to encourage young people to sing. The actual cost of running the camp is about $200 per student. So far, we are able to cover the cost of a set number of singers.
If you would like to become one of those donors to help us in this important cause, please feel free to hit the donate button at the bottom of the registration form when you sign up. You can donate $200 or whatever amount you choose. Every dollar helps. We do not require money to accept a singer into our camp. But, the more money we have, the more campers we can invite.
Who is eligible?
HXNE is open to all high school students with a passion for music and singing who are in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades in March 29, 2025. Special exceptions can be made for college-aged students to participate as peer advisors.

CURRENT MUSIC EDUCATORS AND FUTURE TEACHERS
What is HXNE for Music Educators?
HXNE has a special program for music teachers and those pursuing music education in college! Attendees will spend time in a classroom learning about what makes barbershop music different from other traditional a cappella. They will learn how it can be used to motivate and challenge high school students to be more fulfilled and better singers when used as a small part of a broader music curriculum. Participants will also learn about local and national music resources and events.
Teachers will get a chance to observe the youth chorus rehearse periodically throughout the day and perform in the evening. They will also get a chance to listen to a short live, up-close performance by our skilled faculty quartet. This will be followed with a short Q&A.
Most importantly, our teachers will be able to sing as well. They will get to try out 4-part Barbershop harmony with the other music teachers in the class.
This amazing one day camp experience includes:
- Instruction, singing and performances described above,
- lunch and dinner,
- plus a ticket to the Saturday evening show.
There is no cost “out of pocket” for teachers or students of music education. The tuition is covered by generous donors who support youth singing.
And now the BEST news!
You can attend the camp with your students, but you are not their chaperone! No hustling them from one activity to another. We have a full staff of chaperones who are responsible for the students while you get to take classes, observe rehearsals, and sing with your peers!
As with most music festivals, we certainly encourage you to go over the music with your students before the camp, but they have the ability to practice on their own with digital learning tracks.
HXNE is an interesting and fun event and an invaluable professional development opportunity!
