Join Axial Theatre each month as we read works by both up and coming and established playwrights with moderation by Axial Artistic Director and SAFEHOUSE Program Facilitator Nathan Flower and Lead Moderator Samuel Harps, with additional insights from playwright Evelyn Mertens, Artistic Director Cady McClain and guest moderators. This month we are thrilled to have guest moderator Dominic Hoffman joining us. Dominic recently completed filming the independent feature, Henry Johnson, written and directed by David Mamet, currently in post-production. He co-stars alongside Shia Le Beouf, Evan Jonigkeit and Chris Bauer. He also co-starred in the world premiere of the stage play which ran to sold out crowds in Los Angeles. His other film work includes roles in Searching, Swamp Lion, Red Belt, 187, and Spike Lee’s School Daze. Television appearances have included roles on Goliath, Magnum P.I., S.W.A.T., Hawaii 5-0, 24, Lie to Me, and recurring roles on Grey’s Anatomy, The Mentalist, The Unit, and The Shield. He can also be seen in the HBO telefilm, Phil Spector, starring Al Pacino and HelenMirren. His directorial credits include an all-African American production of Macbeth, A Soldier’s Play, and the role of Dave Roberson in the award-winning, Ali. He has penned episodic television (A Different World), radio, (Wells Fargo Presents: The JP Beckwourth Story). He has written two solo plays, Uncle Jacques and Last Fare, the latter of which won the NAACP BEST NEW PLAY Award. His play No Gavel was commissioned by South Coast Repertory and workshopped by NYC’s Labyrinth Theatre. Saving America and The Meet-Up are his latest two full length plays. Inside Out and Unfinished Business are his two original screenplays. Dominic has adapted two novels for the screen: Walter Mosley’s, Fearless Jones, and an autobiography of Dorothy Dandridge. He has also been the voice of dozens of audio books. He has been nominated for an Audie Award for best narrated Fiction Book of the year twice, winning once for his narration of Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. SYNOPSIS: The Death of King Shotaway by award-winning playwright Samuel Harps is based on the true story of The African Grove Theater (AGT), the first African American Theater established in Lower Manhattan in 1821 by playwright William Henry Brown as a venue to stage his play The Death of King Shotaway. The first theater to perform Othello with a Black actor in the title role, AGT was hampered by a series of threats and bombings. Samuel’s play Don't Explain was first produced at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in New York. The explosive drama based on the death of trumpeter Lee Morgan received seven AUDELCO Awards, including best play and playwright. Samuel was also awarded The Arts Council of Rockland County Executive Award for Literary Artist. New York productions include; The Paul Robeson Theater, The National Black Theater, The Billie Holiday Theater, Theater for the New City, Theater Four, Duality Playhouse, and HERE Theater. Regional productions include; Rutgers University, (Newark) The Christina Cultural Arts Center (Wilmington, DEL) The Painted Bride and Bushfire Theaters, (both in Philadelphia) EXIT Theater, (San Francisco) and Vision Theater, Los Angeles. Samuel is the founder/artistic director of Shades Repertory Theater.
