Learning In PlaceWhere we live is how we live What can the world learn from a small community school on the coast of Brazil? To launch the second season of Educating for the World We Want, we travel to the Mara&uacute; Peninsula in southern Bahia, where the Maramar School offers a powerful example of what education can become when it is deeply connected to the people, culture and place it serves. Maramar is a nonprofit community school providing free and scholarship-supported education, serving children from early childhood through sixth grade, 90% of whom are from low-income families. Inspired by Waldorf education, its pedagogy&mdash;and the relationships that give it life&mdash;are grounded in a set of essential values: respect, responsibility, solidarity, friendship, trust, coherence, and harmony. At the same time, Maramar is a living example of education deeply rooted in place: in its people, local knowledge, arts and traditions, and the natural environment that surrounds it. The school was created at the request of the community, from students in an adult literacy course. How does a school meaningfully connect the democratic impulse with the conditions that invite children and their teachers to assume ownership of their learning&mdash;and guardianship for the care and development of the school itself?&nbsp; Join us as we explore a small school having a profound impact on the lives of children and the community it calls home. A school that may help us all understand more deeply what it means to humanize education&mdash;and, in doing so, offer lessons from which the rest of the world has much to learn. This event will take place online via Zoom and is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis.
