In the early 1900s, Sears Roebuck president and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald met prominent black public intellectual Booker T. Washington. The result? Nearly 5000 schools, known as “Rosenwald Schools,” that were built throughout the segregated South to educate the children and grandchildren of former slaves who lacked education options due to racial discrimination.  Within two generations, the education gap between these students and their white counterparts had dramatically narrowed due to these innovative black schools throughout the South that taught reading, writing and arithmetic as well as vocational skills to provide a path of upward mobility and hope. Join us September 10 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm for an in-person event with drinks and hors d'oeuvres to learn about these Rosenwald Schools. We will livestream in remarks and Q&amp;A with historian Stephanie Deutsch, author of <a href="https://www.amazon.com/You-Need-Schoolhouse-Washington-Segregated/dp/0810131277" target="_blank">You Need a Schoolhouse</a>, the definitive book about the Rosenwald Schools, which chronicles this remarkable early 20th century education collaboration. Mrs. Deutsch’s husband is the great grandson of Julius Rosenwald, whose home base was on the North Shore during his prolific business and philanthropic career.   A portion of the proceeds from this evening will fund our third year of <a href="https://www.gamechangers.film/grants" target="_blank">Gamechangers</a>/<a href="https://newtrierneighbors.substack.com/" target="_blank">New Trier Neighbors</a> grants to deserving kids from <a href="https://www.projecthood.org/" target="_blank">Project HOOD</a> pursuing post-secondary education opportunities!  (Please note at check out you'll be prompted to also donate to Zeffy, the ticket platform for this event -- please customize to be "$0" or whatever you wish.)
