STAGED READINGwith Christine Adaire, Mary Beth Brooker, Judith Fine, and Muriel JohnsonDirected by Sheryl StoodleyTechnical Support Robin W. Doty ESCAPED ALONE&nbsp;by Caryl Churchill&nbsp;A play that meets the present moment. ESCAPED ALONE, by acclaimed English playwright, Caryl Churchill, was published in 2016 around the time of Donald Trump&rsquo;s first election.&nbsp;It contrasts the mundane, witty, fragmented chatter of older women in a backyard, with apocalyptic visions delivered by the younger of them. I discovered this piece in 2018, in the New Scripts Library in the Traverse Theatre at the EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL, Scotland, while on tour with Serious Play&rsquo;s production of THE RED GUITAR. I fell in love with Churchill&rsquo;s imaginative use of language, the experimental construct of the play and the strong female perspective. &nbsp;But at the time, I felt it was far too harsh a message to be presented by Serious Play. Now, in 2026, I feel differently. It is both darkly comedic and chillingly profound.
