The Ukrainian Museum launches its 50th milestone programming on May 17, with A Living Canvas, highlights from the permanent collection that attest to the profound impact this institution has had on artistic innovation, preservation, and interpretation of Ukrainian heritage over its first half century. Its underlying concept is the idea of polotno &mdash; canvas, or cloth &mdash; the weaving of ideas, forms, and creative imagination. It is organized around formal connections rather than chronology: the living threads of Color, Form, Geometry, Figuration, Texture, Line, and Ornamentation that bind together fine and decorative arts, textiles, costume, and folk art. A century ago, fine and folk arts were considered separate entities. Rigid academic conventions designated their practitioners as, on the one hand, &quot;artists&quot; and, on the other, &quot;applied artists&quot; or artisans or craftspeople. The unique character of Ukrainian modern art lies precisely in the fact that these two worlds were always closely allied in the nation&#39;s cultural consciousness.
