Bring a fresh leaf from a plant or two that you would like to barcode.&nbsp;&nbsp; The workshop will combine three elements that form one of the most widely-used infrastructures to support independent, distributed, and course-based research. DNA barcoding is the &ldquo;do everything lab&rdquo; that merges field work, biochemistry, bioinformatics, genetics, ecology, and systematics. Nanopore sequencing, which analyzes individual DNA molecules in real time, is the &ldquo;next big thing&rdquo; in biology education. DNA Subway 2.0 is the only research-grade bioinformatics platform that is easy to use and runs smoothly on desktop computers, tablets, and cell phones. &nbsp;&nbsp; The DNA Learning Center (DNALC) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies are working together to adapt nanopore sequencing for use in education&mdash;including improved chemistry, workflows, experiments, and packaging/pricing attractive to biology educators. At less than $10 per sample, nanopore sequencing is a speedy and cost-effective alternative to commercial sequencing.
