Chinese jute is an invasive species in Northeast Ohio and a cherished plant in China! We will cut down the Chinese jute growing on our property and process it into rope. We will also harvest the seeds and learn how to extract oil out of them which can be used either for cooking or as a drying oil for a nontoxic alternative to polyurethane. Everyone will be able to take some jute fiber and seed oil home. We will use the leaves of the plant to make mas huni - a traditional Moldavian tuna salad made using leaves of this plant along with coconut, chilis and lime. It is served with roti, a wheat based bread similar to a tortilla. If you would like me to get GF tortillas or a vegan alternative to fish please let me know in the notes, we will gladly accommodate all dietary restrictions :) We will also be discussing other wild plants during this class. As this is an invasive species abundant in waste spaces across Northeast Ohio, we will not be giving away seeds to take home. But we do encourage you to harvest this plant if you see it growing wild. It exhibits allelopathy meaning it exerts a chemical compound into the soil around it which inhibits all plants other than it and it&#39;s offspring from growing making it a highly unwise plant to grow in your own home garden.
