A success from the moment it was published, with more than 150,000 copies sold on its release day in the U.S.Over the next few weeks it more than 1.5 million copies were sold making it one of the best selling coffee table books ever published. Although controversial when published due to its adult content, today it is seen as one of the defining moments in Madonna's career, with a broad social and cultural impact as an important example of postmodern feminism. The content is influenced by punk rock, surrealism, the 1933 work Paris de nuit, and photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe.
More recently, in 2022 Madonna partnered with Yves Saint Laurent for an art pop-exhibition entitled Sex by Madonna at the 2022 Art Basel exhibition in Miami, with 800 special copies were reissued. In 2023 Christies auctioned off original photographs to support charity.
Although suppressed and banned, Sex by Madonna is a very influential book in late social and cultural history.
