Basic Botany for Plant Enthusiasts 8/30 @3pm

Join plant scientist and educator Dr. Jamie Boyer, NYBG Vice President of Education, for a fascinating hands-on workshop on plant form and function. Roll up your sleeves to explore the basic structure of plants, from roots to shoots and from flowers to fruits. You’ll learn how to observe plant health indicators, use simple tools to study plant structure, and practice basic techniques for maintenance and care. Walk away with not just new knowledge, but also practical skills you can use in your own apartment or garden.

Habitat Style: Potting & Staging Succulents 8/31 @3:30pm

How to pot & stage cactus + succulents habitat style. Each participant will get to take home a well staged cactus or succulent. We'll begin the workshop talking about the habitat of these plants, and how they survive/thrive. That will transition to talking about how that translates to a potted plant. We'll then talk about potting medium (soil) that I've specially formulated for these plants/pots. Next we'll unpot the plants from plastic, prepare for potting and then pot them in terracotta. We'll make sure the plants are snug, then top dress them with small rocks/minerals, sand and frame the plant with a slightly larger rock or three.
