Drug mechanism of action, utility in diabetes control and cardiovascular disease, and the plethora of risks for people of size, both with and without ED will be elucidated. The presenter will critically examine the limited evidence for using GLP medications in populations with ED. Case conceptualization using a trauma-informed, eating disorder informed, health equity, weight inclusive and holistic lens will be described. Practical tips to navigate risk/benefit discussions with patients, families and medical providers will be offered. This course will be divided into an introduction, a review of research, the risks associated with fragmented provision of care for patients with comorbid ED/T2D, and a proposed solution to foster patient-centered, weight inclusive, holistic care. A guide for how eating disorder professionals can bridge some important gaps will be offered. The risks associated with GLP-1 medications used to treat T2D in eating disorder patients arise from fat-phobic messaging in medical settings, as well as the direct impact of GLP-1 meds on appetite, weight and eating behaviors.
