The Story Behind the Bound Block Quilt The United States Sanitary Commission was established on June 18, 1861, as a relief organization dedicated to supporting sick and wounded Union soldiers during the Civil War. Inspired by the British Sanitary Commission’s work during the Crimean War (1853–1856), the organization encouraged women’s groups across the country to provide essential supplies for soldiers, including knitted socks, gloves, scarves, quilts, and other handmade items. An estimated 125,000 quilts were made and donated during the Civil War. Sadly, very few have survived. These quilts were often made quickly from inexpensive materials and fabric scraps and endured harsh conditions in military camps and hospitals. Many were eventually worn out, repurposed, or even used as shrouds for fallen soldiers. Greenville Quilters Guild’s Tribute The Greenville Quilters Guild accepted the challenge of creating its own Bound Block “potholder” quilt as our 2026–2027 raffle quilt. Our guild hosted a special workshop led by Lynn Gorges of New Bern, North Carolina, a respected lecturer and quilt historian. Lynn shared the fascinating history of Sanitary Commission quilts before guiding our members in creating individual blocks using Civil War reproduction fabrics and traditional period block designs. Our members created 90 hand-pieced and hand quilted blocks, each measuring 10 inches, which were sewn and assembled by hand into a beautiful 90" × 100" quilt. The quilt was a true labor of love, skill, history, and patience. Thank you for supporting the Greenville Quilters Guild and helping us preserve the history, artistry, and fellowship of quilting for generations to come! 🧵❤️
