The Olde Stone House, located on Egg Harbor Road in Washington Township, Gloucester County, is one of the community's most treasured historic landmarks. The Stone House and Smoke House are listed on the NJ State and National Register of historic sites. Locals date the stone house to the 1730’s. It has witnessed generations of Washington Township history and today serves as the centerpiece of the Olde Stone House Historic Village.
For my wife, Candice, and our family, the house holds an especially personal connection. Her grandfather, James G. Atkinson, was born in the Olde Stone House in 1927 and is remembered as the last person born there. The Atkinson family lived on the property for generations, making this historic building part of our family's story as well as the community's. James G. Atkinson was a strong leader in restoring and preserving the house, local parks, and open space.
I created this pen-and-ink drawing in 2026, exactly 40 years after the restoration and dedication of the Olde Stone House in 1986. I intended to capture the house as it appeared at this point in its history, preserving the architecture, stonework, windows, doors, grounds, and surrounding details as faithfully as possible.
For me, this is more than a drawing of an old house. It preserves a place that holds Washington Township's history, our family’s history, and a personal connection that makes the Olde Stone House especially meaningful to us. As a 20+ year volunteer for the Olde Stone House and the Historic Village, I was proud to capture this moment in time.
