The Mental Health Association in New Jersey’s (MHANJ) Institute for Housing Safety and Stability will offer specialized professional training and evidence-based practices for staff working and supporting people living with serious mental illness and who also have cooccurring hoarding disorders. Through this program, participants will be trained as Decluttering Coaches who:• Support clients through emotional and environmental decluttering.• Teach self-care, home maintenance, and community living skills to promote tenancy and neighborliness.• Implement relapse prevention strategies to maintain safe, healthy living environments.• Provide ongoing coaching to sustain progress and prevent crisis situations. Community BenefitsBy training professionals to intervene early and provide long-term support, this program will reduce the costly consequences of severe hoarding, including evictions, hazardous cleanouts, and emergency interventions. Approximately 35% of people living with hoarding disorder have a co-occurring serious mental illness. Every case of HD not only affects the person living with it but also places housing providers, neighbors, and first responders at risk. This program aims to create safer, healthier communities by reducing those risks, improving quality of life for individuals with HD, and preventing the escalation of unsafe living conditions.
