We will primarily use watercolor and pencil on paper, but students are welcome to incorporate other media, and mix media. Focus will be on form, value and texture, while creating a likeness from source photos (that said, we will also explore examples from master illustrators which are more “stylized” in nature). Students will have the option of choosing a favorite animal for the final project. Materials List for Student Purchase: ● HB pencil ($1), optional additional pencils, soft vs hard, such as 2H, 3B etc.● Kneaded eraser ($1)● Water-soluble graphite pencil or a set of them (I will provide first class to try)● Painters tape ($2.99 Agway), better than masking tape. Or artist's tape, it issometimes called.● Small spray bottle ($1) (optional)● Rag and/or paper towels● Tubes of watercolor paint (pans are ok too) EITHER Cotman (less expensive, studentgrade) OR a higher quality like QOR (or even Daniel Smith/ M. Graham if you reallywant to splurge). If you are just starting out, I recommend Cotman, which is made by Windsor Newton. Note: Sap green is often a good option for green foliage if you like outdoor scenes. Ifgetting tubes on your own, you may want to pick that up. Personally, I don’t use blackoften. It is a preference. I usually mix a dark color from brown and blue, but other artistsuse it. I use white paint sparingly, preferring the white of the paper. Also, if you arebuying tubes individually, I would definitely get ultramarine and burnt sienna. I will providefurther guidance on color mixing in class. ● 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper (Canson paper not recommended). Arches paperis great, more expensive than student grade paper but GREAT quality. The heavierthe paper (300 lb., for example), the better for large washes especially. 140 lb. isgood for our purposes. Get whatever size you want, but I would recommendsomething close to 9”x12” or 16”x20”. ● Watercolor brushes, prices variable, get the best you can afford. 3 recommended are1 small round Size 6; 1 large round brush size 10 or 12; one flat brush, 1 inch Quicknote: I have recently been enjoying Chinese brushes. I have a bunch and you cantry them in class. If you like, I have 5 extra unused brushes, which I could sell to youfor a couple of dollars per brush. They are great for depicting trees, and for texture.(Do not use hot water on them as the glue may release the bristles.) ● Palette- white plastic or metal with wells for paints and a large mixing area (thecovered ones are convenient for carrying around and cover can be used as a mixingarea) or 2 white plates.
