Instrumental Improvisation with Hank Roberts- Instructed by Hank Roberts
Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30 pm from 4/8-5/27 (8 classes)
Ages: Adults
Requirements: Intermediate to advance level students that need to be able to read music at a reasonable level.
Topics covered will include:
- Improvising within harmonic (including the study of Modes) and rhythmic frameworks (similar but not limited to Jazz and Rock idioms/structures).
- Conceptual, abstract and free improvisation
- Improvisation in the realm of New Music
- Collective composition/improvisation
- Conduction/gestural compositional improvisation for ensembles of varied sizes
- Thematic and motivic development
- Phrase construction
- Mirroring and contrasting expressions
- Posture and attention
- Breathing, space and phrasing
- Psychological and social dynamics of playing with others
- Discovery, revelation and inspiration
Participants will also have the opportunity to play some of Mr. Roberts’ and other composers’ music highlighting a variety of improvisational concepts inspired from written material.
