Bread & Puppet presents “Jephte” , an outdoor performance set to an oratorio composed by Giacomo Carissimi in 1650. “Jephte” was created by Peter Schumann in 1974, and was performed only twice as part of the last Domestic Resurrection Circus at Cate Farm in Plainfield, Vermont. The show uses puppets, landscape, the stunning baroque music, and the harsh biblical story of Jephte— the story of a general who sacrifices his daughter for military victory— as elements. More than a recreation of a 17th century oratorio, the show was a representation of the loss of the American soul in the Vietnam War. After the show Bread & Puppet will serve its sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread & Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale. Tickets are non-refundable.
