Founded in 1925, the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach (JLNVB) empowers women to lead, serve and work together to create positive, lasting change in our community. Our mission to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training is the foundation of everything we do. Through hands-on community service, partnerships, and training, we are able to meet the evolving needs of our neighbors, while fostering leadership development among our members and breaking down barriers that hinder women from achieving success.  <h3>OUR HISTORY</h3>JLNVB was the first Junior League established in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the 75th League in the United States. Led by our first president, Ms. Jane Tucker, JLNVB had 10 founding members and was admitted into the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) on January 15, 1925  Since its founding in 1901 in New York City by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest, and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 110,000 women in 297 leagues across six countries. Over the last 124 years, the Junior League has empowered an estimated 1.9 million women to be transformational leaders in their local communities. <h3>OUR IMPACT</h3>Through comprehensive training and meaningful programming, we educate and train our members to be responsible community leaders while supplying critical volunteers and services to local nonprofits and the community at large. Since 2020, JLNVB members have completed an average of 2,000+ direct service hours and 400+ training hours per year. Some highlights from this time include: building and installing 4 little libraries; providing over 1,600 books to Little Libraries across the region; providing 600 period packs to low-income students and families; enhancing two Title I elementary schools through murals, playground upgrades, and outdoor beautification projects; and more. In support of its community programs and training initiatives, the league also raises more than $40,000 a year through its signature fundraisers—including our annual Touch-a-Truck event, a hands-on learning experience for children to learn about vehicles of all shapes and sizes.When it comes to the community, we make an impact by focusing on society’s most pressing issues and adjusting our efforts according to our community’s emerging needs. Our work is always evolving, and that keeps us on our toes, striving for progress and preparing to take on whatever comes next. By giving women the tools to lead, educating them about their communities’ needs, and helping them put their unique brand of creativity and skills to work, JLNVB is making a significant impact in South Hampton Roads.
