A West Coast native conifer from the Moore Farms Botanical Garden collection, this arborvitae-like evergreen can grow to a large tree of 60'-80'+ over a long period of time. In its mature form incense cedar is a stately tree with pendulous branch ends and deeply ridged bark. As its name suggests, the foliage of this tree gives off a sweet evergreen fragrance when bruised or crushed. This plant is often hard-to-find on the East Coast but seems to be well-adapted given the proper environment. Needs well-drained site with adequate watering at planting and good supplemental watering during droughts. An afternoon shade or high canopy shade is ideal for slowly acclimating this tree to its new planting environment. Keep surrounding vegetation controlled and/or to a minimum as residual humidity and poor air flow can quickly kill these trees here. USDA Zones 5-8. 3 gallon container.

One of Moore Farms Botanical Garden's unique palm collection species, the Brazilian Thatch Palm has proven to be uniquely hardy as a mature plant near the Firetower Visitor Center. Native to high elevation cliffs and mountains in central South America, this unusual palm somewhat resembles a thicker-trunked windmill palm in form. Broad palmate fronds are subtended on the trunk by unique fibers that appear woven together. As this plant matures, these fibers increase in volume and begin to form a thatch-like layer with fibers terminating in spines. Plant this palm in decent sun exposure near a building or other heat-retaining structure and away from prevailing cold-season winds, as it benefits from winter buffering. Provide good moisture, particularly rainwater, as it establishes, but keep from getting too much moisture exposure during winter. USDA Zones 8-10. 3 gallon container.

Own an unusual piece of Moore Farms Botanical Garden's plant collection - Mexican Lobelia (Lobelia laxiflora), considered the most drought-tolerant of our planting options for lobelia. This unique plant tends to be more tolerant of full sun. Give this perennial good drainage and particularly good winter drainage, as it does not do well with high winter moisture. A plant that has in recent years become one of the favorites of the Moore Farms Botanical Garden staff, 'Ming Treasure' (Iris x amplifora 'Ming Treasure') is an absolute must-have for the perennial garden. Growing to a giant clump of rhizomes 4-5' wide in only a few years, the broad lush foliage of this iris can grow upwards of 3' tall with giant purple flowers above that! Proven hardy for Moore Farms Botanical Garden in the relentlessly challenging landscapes of downtown Lake City, orange flame shrimp/justicia plant acts as an herbaceous perennial in our area. Broad green leaves emerge in the springtime along lush stems that grow to 3-5' tall. As the growth matures, axillary bunches of vibrantly colored orange flowers burst into bloom and give any sunny area a tropical flair. Best sited with good sun exposure and decent summertime moisture, though it can take afternoon shade well. Take care to avoid wintertime residual moisture, as excess water can rot out this perennial. Part of the Moore Farms Botanical Garden conifer collection, 'Red Velvet' (Chamaecyparis thyoides 'Red Velvet') is a unique cultivar of our native white cedar. 'Red Velvet' exhibits only the juvenile growth of the plant resulting in a soft fluffy-form conical plant. This specimen tolerates sun to some shade and a variety of soil types. Once established, this shrub can even tolerate some periods of drought but benefits from good watering at initial planting. Grows best and quickest in well-draining organic soil. USDA Zones 6-9, possibly colder. 1 gallon container.

While bold texture foliage plants may be easier to come by in our region, giant rice paper plant provides a unique twist on the elephant ears and taros. Large fuzzy leaves on tall 5-7' stems provide a uniquely tropical feel to a garden and last all growing season. Like many subtropical foliage plants, this rhizomatous spreader is an herbaceous perennial, so be prepared to cut it back during the dormant winter months. Also as noted previously, this is a spreading perennial, so plant it with enough space to be enjoyed en masse. USDA Zones 7-10. 1 gallon container.

A Moore Farms Botanical Garden mainstay, wide-leafed dyckia tolerates some of the toughest environments the garden has to offer. Likely a hybrid between species from Brazil, this drought-loving bromeliad relative grows in the gravelly soil next to the garden offices and receives no irrigation outside of waterings at initial planting. During bloom season in early spring, 3-5' tall spikes of neon orange flowers rise from the clumps of purple-hued leaves and make for a fascinating focal plant. Also does well in container gardens.
