FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Kappa Detroit Foundation to Transform Vacant Property into Community GardenPhase 1 launches with community volunteer event scheduled for September 26 DETROIT &mdash; September 2026 &mdash; The Kappa Detroit Foundation (KDF) is transforming an underutilized property at 3907 Canton St. in Detroit into a new Community Garden designed to promote healthy living, wellness, education, environmental stewardship and greater neighborhood engagement. The project will officially launch with a Community Garden Volunteer Event on Saturday, September 26, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The volunteer effort will bring together Kappa Detroit Foundation members, community residents and volunteers to begin the physical transformation of the Foundation-owned property into a sustainable community asset. &ldquo;Our vision extends beyond creating a garden. We want to create another space where residents, volunteers and community partners can come together around wellness, education, service and neighborhood pride,&rdquo; said Emmanuel Idowu, President of the Kappa Detroit Foundation. &ldquo;September 26 represents an important first step toward that vision, and we are excited to invite the community to help us build it.&rdquo; Cultivating a New Community AssetThe approximately 3,528-square-foot property will be developed in phases. Phase 1 plans include raised garden beds, flower and landscaping areas, a rainwater collection system, a gazebo and seating area, and a dedicated clover-grass wellness space for activities including yoga and earthing. The project is being championed by David Montgomery, Kappa Detroit Foundation Board Member and Programs Committee Chair, whose leadership and innovative approach have helped advance the concept from an underutilized property to a broader vision for community-centered programming. &ldquo;This project represents what is possible when we look creatively at the resources already within our community and ask how they can better serve people,&rdquo; Montgomery said. &ldquo;The garden gives us an opportunity to combine service, sustainability, education and wellness in one space while bringing residents and organizations together.&rdquo; The September volunteer effort will begin the physical transformation of the property and establish the foundation for future phases as KDF continues engaging philanthropic, corporate and community partners in the long-term development of the site.
