About the Artist

Choi Myoung Young is a leading figure in the Dansaekhwa movement and contemporary Korean art. Dansaekhwa, which translates as “monochrome painting”, was formalized in the 1970’s in reference to Korean artists who redefined abstract painting in reaction to a turbulent socio-political environment. At the heart of Dansaekhwa is the eastern philosophy of ‘無為 (Wu Wei)’; the concept of non-action, to exist in stillness and let things take their course.

Choi’s artistic practice began taking shape while studying at Hongik University. In 1962, he graduated and co-founded the artist collective “Origin” with Suh Seung Won and Lee Seung Jio. Whilst each artist had a distinctive style, they were united in expanding the boundaries of Korean abstract art. Choi’s focus was the tactile experience of placing pigment onto the plane while letting go of all other intentions. With form, content and individual expression put aside, the artist was absorbed by subtle characteristics of his own actions. Using his bare hands, he would experiment with the quantity of color, as well as the pressure, speed and motion when it was applied to the surface.

About the Artist

Kim Young-Hun (b. 1964 in Nonsan, Korea) is currently based between New York City and Seoul. He obtained B.F.A. in painting from Hongik University and holds two M.F.A. from Chelsea College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths College in London.

Living through the transition between the analog and digital generations, Kim is passionate about observing and deciphering the unknown between the 1 and 0 binary codes. His works demonstrate a traditional Korean painting technique called Hyuk-pil (혁필), in which the painter mixes various colors and paints with rapid strokes using a leather brush. The multi-colored stripes that seem to flow like ink are made by one continuous brush stroke across the canvas, with the oil colors melting together and permeating into the canvas. Kim has exhibited extensively internationally, with over 15 solo and 70 group exhibitions.

His paintings are in several prestigious public and corporate collections, including Bank of America, The Arts Club, and numerous museums.

(Chelsea College of Art and Design)과 골드스미스 대학(Goldsmiths College)에서 각각 석사학위(M.F.A.)

About the Artist

David Heo is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, collage, murals, and public projects. Drawing from Korean folklore, Western painting traditions, and personal memory, his work explores the intersections of cultural histories and contemporary experiences.

Through layered compositions and recurring imagery, Heo creates psychologically charged narratives where vulnerability, tension, and warmth coexist. His practice examines how memories and inherited stories evolve over time, transforming familiar imagery into shifting expressions of emotion and belonging.

Born and raised in Georgia, Heo developed his practice in Chicago, where he earned his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo exhibitions at Realation Space in Seoul, Hashimoto Contemporary in New York, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. Selected group exhibitions include the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and Half Gallery. His commissioned projects include collaborations with Diptyque, Lotte Hotel, and Vans, with features in Vogue Portugal, The Korea Daily, and VISLA Magazine.

(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)에서 MFA를 취득했다.

Korean Cultural Center of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Half Gallery 그의 작업은 Vogue Portugal, The Korea Daily, VISLA Magazine 등에도 소개된 바 있다.

Minimum Bid Increment: $200

About the Artist

Sung Jang is a Korean-born, Chicago-based artist and designer whose practice explores the relationship between nature, human intention, and perception. Drawing from traditional Korean aesthetics, he is particularly interested in attitudes of contemplation—observing the forms and orders already present in nature, intervening only as much as necessary, and at times allowing things to remain as they are.

Having lived across Korea, Europe, and the United States, Jang’s perspective has also been shaped by distance, migration, and the shifting relationship between memory and place. Across painting, object, and installation, his work considers the boundaries between nature and the made, material and image, and physical reality and perception.

Jang studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Domus Academy in Milan and is currently a professor at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Design. His work has been presented internationally at venues including the Venice Biennale, Design Miami, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Volume Gallery.

Sung Jang

(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)와 밀라노 도무스 아카데미(Domus Academy)에서 수학했으며, 현재 일리노이대학교 시카고(UIC) 디자인스쿨 교수로 재직 중이다. Design Miami, Victoria and Albert Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Volume Gallery

K-Gundam Series — 〈Janggun〉

Buncheong

Estimated Value: $ 4,000 ~ 5,000
Starting Bid: $2,800
Minimum Bid Increment: $200

About the Artist

David T. Kim is a Chicago-based ceramic artist and founder of DTK Ceramics. His work combines traditional Korean and Western ceramic techniques with a contemporary sculptural sensibility, exploring the space between artistic expression and everyday use.

K-Gundam combines the forms of traditional Korean ceramics with the Gundam robots that fascinated the artist since childhood. The series brings together personal memory, Korean cultural heritage, and mechanical imagery.

〈Janggun〉 is based on the traditional Korean vessel known as a janggun (缶), used during the Joseon Dynasty to store grains or liquids. Its horizontally elongated, rounded body is reimagined with geometric elements inspired by Gundam’s armor and mechanical structure.

Through this transformation, a familiar utilitarian vessel becomes a futuristic sculpture, bringing tradition and popular culture, softness and mechanical tension, into a single form.

About the Artist

Hyejeong Kim is a Korean ceramic artist whose practice explores the shifting relationship between material, form, memory, and the body. Rooted in ceramic traditions across Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom, her work moves beyond fixed vessel forms toward organic structures shaped through process, deformation, and transformation.

Through subtle glazes, irregular surfaces, and tactile forms, Kim treats clay as a living material—one that carries traces of time, memory, and physical experience. Her works evoke skins, shells, and natural formations, creating a quiet tension between interior and exterior, fragility and resilience, control and chance.

Kim was a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize 2020 and received the Korea Craft Prize in 2022. Her works are held in major institutional collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, Korean Cultural Center of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

She holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Columbia College Chicago and is currently pursuing an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Kim’s practice is rooted in Buddhist philosophical thought, particularly ideas surrounding suffering, attachment, wisdom, and compassion. Drawing from the concepts of sabba and dukkha, she explores how artistic practice can become a space for reflection and transformation. Through material, gesture, and process, her work seeks to evoke life-affirming states such as hope, joy, serenity, and transcendence, grounded in the belief that art can offer meaningful ways of engaging with and alleviating human suffering.

About the Artist

Soyoung S. Park explores the complexities of human relationships, expressing the cycles of connection, rupture, and healing. Inspired by the cycles of growth and renewal in nature, she finds symbols of resilience, transformation, and the possibility of beginning again.

Her paintings bring together forests and organic forms, drawing on the colors of nature and childhood memories of hanbok, traditional Korean dress. Through vivid hues and flowing contours, Park weaves personal memory with universal experiences of loss, recovery, and belonging.

Having studied painting at Hongik University in South Korea at both undergraduate and graduate levels, Park later relocated to the United States while maintaining ties with Korea. Her work invites viewers to reflect on how moments of rupture can become opportunities for healing, connection, and renewal.

About Andrew Bae

For nearly three decades, Andrew Bae played an important role in Chicago’s contemporary art community through Andrew Bae Gallery, which he founded in River North in 1990. The gallery became known for introducing Korean and other Asian contemporary artists to American collectors, museums, and audiences, while building long-term relationships with artists and supporting their development over time.

After retiring from gallery operations in 2019, Bae has continued to contribute his experience and perspective to the cultural community, particularly through conversations around collecting, artists, and the role of cultural institutions in building meaningful connections through art.
