For centuries, Muslim architects, designers, and artists have sought to draw closer to God in every aspect of their work, using art and architecture as a means of ibadah (worship), and bringing the presence of the sacred into every part of their cities. In our modern era, architecture is focused on budget, flashy design, and speed - but it lacks the sacredness of traditional Islamic architecture. What makes Islamic architecture so beautiful and spiritually rich, and how can we learn from the design of these sacred spaces? Join us in a workshop to learn the basics of Islamic art and architecture, and uncover the beauty of centuries of Islamic design. When:&nbsp;July 11th, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PMWho:&nbsp;Youth (Ages 13-19)&nbsp; Opening Discussion:&nbsp;We&rsquo;ll begin by asking students to reflect on the most beautiful buildings and spaces they have experienced and explore how architecture can shape our emotions, movement, sense of scale, and experience of place. Islamic Architectural Patterns &amp; Proportions:&nbsp;Next, we&rsquo;ll have a short talk on the remarkable ubiquity of patterns in Islamic architecture and their implementation across different scales of design&mdash;from intricate ornament and surface pattern to the proportions and organization of entire buildings. Fundamentals of Architecture:&nbsp;Students will then design a mosque and model it with rigid green foam and carving tools, then sketch out the plans and sections, helping to understand how to architecturally represent the designs. The activity will include drawing classical Islamic patterns using a compass and pencil. Next, we will compare these plans and sections to those of well-known mosques, such as Masjid Al-Aqsa and the Sultanahmet Mosque, and discuss proportion, harmony, light, shadow, compression, and expansion that enhance the spiritual feeling within a masjid.&nbsp; Closing Discussion:&nbsp;We&rsquo;ll conclude by returning to the questions raised at the beginning: What makes a space beautiful? How can architecture draw us toward something greater than ourselves? These reflections will inspire new experiences and interpretations of the spaces around them and of the very same buildings we started the session with. In collaboration with MCWS.
