In 1928, the Third International adopted a resolution on the right of self-determination for African Americans in the Black Belt, in the southeastern US. Over the next decade, this resolution guided the CPUSA’s regional focus in the US South, as a frontline organization in the struggle against white supremacy. This was a period of great experiments in building an independent multiracial working-class movement in North America, a movement that confronted the remnants of slavery, under conditions that foreshadowed the fascism that would soon develop in Europe. Across the cities and rural areas of the US South, communists engaged existing traditions of struggle, and planted seeds for the growth of the movement against racism in the following decades.

Fidel Castro's speeches were classrooms for the revolution. Fernando Gonzalez Llort is one of the ‘Cuban Five’, the revolutionary heroes, unfairly imprisoned in the United States for fighting against terrorist organizations that have operated from US territory against Cuba. A graduate of International Relations, Fernando served as an internationalist combatant in southern Angola between 1987–89.

Amílcar Cabral: an agronomist, a poet, a politician, a leader of his party, a life that led a revolution to victory against colonialism.

Known to many as “The Engineer,” Amílcar Cabral was dedicated to putting study to action, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to being with and learning from the people. LUIS FONSECA was a leader of the PAIGC in Cape Verde during the clandestine anti-colonial struggle, serving as the Secretary General of the party's youth wing, the Juventude Africano Amílcar Cabral. Currently, he serves as Chair of the General Council of the Fundação Amílcar Cabral.

DESMOND FONSECA is a PhD candidate in History at UCLA, currently writing a dissertation on the revolutionary theory and praxis of the PAIGC.

WISAM RAFEEDIE is a former Palestinian political prisoner, full-time researcher and lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences at Bethlehem University–Palestine. He was a part-time lecturer in Sociology and Cultural Studies at Birzeit University. He holds two master’s degrees from Birzeit University, one in sociology for his thesis on the changes in the status of women in contemporary Palestinian literature before and after Oslo, and the other in contemporary Arab studies.

PALESTINIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT’S POPULAR UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE believes that education must be wielded in service of struggle. Their viewpoint finds inspiration and guidance from the Popular University in Palestine, of which the martyred Basel al-Araj was a part. One of its educators, Khaled Odeitallah, asked: “What is the political role that knowledge production must play?” From this perspective they seek to motivate, engage and facilitate a robust engagement on the history and present of our struggle.

Disability and Empire: Class, US Imperialism, and the Struggle for Disability Justice aims to bring visibility to the liberation struggle of people with disabilities, adding an internationalist and class perspective—and making them the subject, not the object, of history.

Exploring the social construction of “disability” in the US, the authors look at the history of the disability rights movement, bringing in the stories and voices of those engaged in the daily fight for a better world: from solidarity with liberation struggles of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s; to building solidarity between care workers and clients; to the victories won by disability activists and the status of rights for people with disabilities today. This book also expands beyond the US, critically examining the role of U.S. imperialism in killing and disabling millions, as well as studying how other societies deal with disability. Looking ahead, it paints a picture of what  disability justice may look like under socialism.

JOHN PETER DALY (1965–2023) was a lifelong socialist organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Raised in a working-class New Jersey family, he joined the socialist movement in New York City in 1986 and helped build the Party in cities across the country. A public health professional who worked with the World Health Organization, he later became disabled after a traumatic brain injury—and threw himself into organizing for disability justice, co-writing a pamphlet on disability liberation before his death in 2023 at age 58.

JOYCE CHEDIAC has participated in activism going back to the Civil Rights, women's, and anti-Vietnam War movements of the 1960s. An Arab-American, she has written on the Middle East and women’s issues for over five decades. She is a registered nurse, and the former assistant editor of The American Journal of Public Health. Chediac is hard of hearing and dyslectic. Her writings on disability include: “People with disabilities are half of people killed by cops” and “Disability rights in the age of austerity.” She is currently a national editor of the Liberation News website and lives in New York City.

JANE CUTTER is a founding member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. She is a life-long caregiver, starting as a teen providing care to family members and neighbors with disabilities. Since the early 1990s, she has taught students with disabilities and earned a doctorate in Special Education in 2003. Some of her earliest experiences as an activist include participating in protests at the Sacks theater chain in Boston with the Disabled People’s Liberation Front. She has contributed to other books including Revolutionary Education and Socialist Reconstruction, and edited Climate Solutions Beyond Capitalism by Tina Landis. She is a member of the national editorial team for Liberation News.

SUNIL FREEMAN was the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s 2020 Vice Presidential candidate, running with Gloria La Riva. He has written for Liberation News, and his essays have been published in journals including Gargoyle, American Kahani, Delmarva Review, Washingtonian, The International, and Jaggery. His music reviews have appeared in The Washington Post, and fiction in The Account. Now retired, he worked for many years as Assistant Director of The Writer’s Center, a non-profit in Bethesda, Maryland.
