Two seemingly separate ideas around the ultra-wealthy are providing fodder for our May salon. One is <a fr-original-style="" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_California_billionaire_tax_initiative" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">California&rsquo;s ballot initiative</a>&nbsp;on global assets of those worth over $1 billion. The other is about the mindset of those billionaires with regard to how they view the world as their playground.&nbsp; First, it is true billionaires buy, borrow, and die. By not selling their stocks or other assets, and borrowing against them, billionaires are not subject to the same effective tax rates compared with those earning incomes from work rather than investments. But levying tax on global assets&mdash;including assets held outside of California&mdash;may seem to contradict the expectation that taxes should be against what you earn, not just own since assets could devalue and enforcing could be tricky. Do we admire them for how many made their fortunes rather than inheriting? Do we despise them for taking an unfair share of wealth from their company&rsquo;s workers? Is it time we find limits to their power and/or implement a &ldquo;fair&rdquo; tax policy? And what would that look like? No major preparation or research is needed for the salon. Come to opine and debate, learn and dialogue. We are going to try an experiment. We will use the discussion to gauge if &nbsp;future deep dive salon(s) on one or more of the topics is warranted!
