There is a lot we can learn from them. Join us at the Plant Lab for an afternoon with mushroom educator Olga Tzogas, founder of Smugtown Mushrooms, to explore some of the remarkable ways people have worked with medicinal mushrooms for food, wellness, and community care. In this hands-on workshop we will spend time getting to know several well known medicinal mushrooms including Reishi, Lion&rsquo;s Mane, Turkey Tail, and Shiitake. Together we will explore how these fungi live in the world around us, learn about the life cycle and biology of mushrooms and their fungal relatives, and discover simple ways to prepare them at home including teas, tinctures, and oxymels. Along the way we will share tastings of long brewed Chaga tea and freshly prepared mushroom extracts while learning about the ecology of fungi and the relationships they form with the landscapes around us. Your ticket includes the supplies needed to prepare and take home an 8 oz medicinal mushroom extract. Participants will also have the option to begin the first step of a double extracted Reishi tincture that can continue extracting at home. Community Potluck: We&rsquo;ll also have a simple, informal potluck. Potlucks are one of the ways we care for each other and lighten the lift of everyday living. About the InstructorOlga Tzogas began her love affair with fungi and plants more than fifteen years ago with the help and guidance of family, teachers, and community. In 2011 she founded Smugtown Mushrooms, which provides mushroom cultivation supplies and education for people growing mushrooms indoors or outdoors for food and medicine. Olga has taught hundreds of people how to grow mushrooms, prepare medicinal extracts, and deepen their relationship with fungi and the natural world. Alongside the collective The Mycelium Underground, she helped create the New Moon Mycology Summit in 2018. She was also a core organizer of the Radical Mycology Convergence in 2016 and the MycoSymbiotics Festival from 2015 to 2017. Each year Olga returns to her ancestral homeland in Greece to guide small groups in immersive, land based experiences exploring the fungi, plants, and traditional ecological knowledge of the region.
