Description: As blind people, some of us are aware our walk in life isn’t full of sunshine and rainbows. Advocacy, challenges, and opportunities to defend our beliefs or rights take up a huge part of this. There are moments where we need spaces to exist as humans. This two-hour process group embraces members’ humanity, shares experiences of what blindness means for us in the real world, and how it shapes our perspectives in our individual/ shared lives during the first hour. Deep discussions include weaving in elements of evidence-based approaches like music and talk therapy to elevate members’ voices.
During the second hour, mental health and wellness resources are shared. These interventions are meant to empower attendees to promote mindfulness and strategies for healthy emotional and physical well-being as we continue to live successful lives following this experience. D. A. C. intends to set a foundation to demystify disability for attendees that may be new to blindness or disability, but also further empower attendees that are not new to this journey and may need some further encouragement on their path to continued independence on accomplishing their individual goals. This group is facilitated by Robert Parsons, Jr., a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
