Encantamiento de una centella is inspired by a poem by Marosa di Giorgio from her book La flor de lis, in which a bride is enchanted by a spark (or flash of lightning) that lives in the garden of a house, suspending her in time. The bride is always drawn toward it but can never reach it.
Both pieces belong to the series La antigua Mujer-piedra (The Ancient Stone-Woman), in which I am interested in discovering different ways of representing woman as an archetype of human existence: a female body that can speak, yes, of what it is to be a woman in the world and of the advantages and disadvantages of having been socialized in that way, but that can also be the spokesperson for the fears and general complexities of being alive, for unresolved questions, for the longing for knowledge of a universal truth, and also for some proposals or desires for forms of coexistence that could foster a gentler experience for all living beings.
About the Artist
Mónica Figueroa (Mexico City, 1991) lives and works in Oaxaca, where she has a figurative painting practice that stages female bodies and hybrid beings coexisting with natural phenomena. Her work proposes an affective, anti-patriarchal horizon, where the organic and the mythical intertwine. Monica studied Visual Arts at UNAM and her work has been exhibited in Mexico, the US, Europe, and Japan. She has been a recipient of the Jóvenes Creadores grant on several occasions.
My relationship with Pocoapoco began when I was accepted to participate as a local artist in the March-April 2026 residency.
It was a very enriching experience, with an approach to art grounded in diversity, respect, and admiration for difference. I felt connected to my fellow residents and grateful to inhabit a calm, even tender, space.
