It is the voice of a woman born in the whirl of Cossack Ukraine in the 17th century &mdash; during a time of liberation struggle, losses, oaths, and betrayals. Marusya appears not only as a legendary songwriter but as the spiritual nerve of the nation. Her life unfolds against the backdrop of historical upheavals &mdash; Cossack campaigns, the destruction of towns, moral choices that determined Ukraine&rsquo;s fate. In her personal tragedy &mdash; the betrayal of her beloved, a trial, a death sentence &mdash; is reflected the tragedy of a people fighting for the right to dignity.
