Mozart's Mass in C Minor K417 The Park Slope Singers, celebrating its 35th concert season, will sing Mozart's unfinished masterwork, the Mass in C Minor, using the score edited by Philip Legge. In fleshing out missing sections, Legge stayed true to Mozart's creation, choosing not to compose any new music in completing the task. The singers will be joined by the Musica Bella Orchestra of New York using the score Mozart wrote for this work. Notable in the Mass are lush soprano solos written with a wide range and with challenging coloratura to display the talents of his fiancée, Constanze Weber. The first and third sections of the incomplete Gloria (”Gloria” and “Cum sancto spiritu”) are filled with long, allegro eighth-note or sixteenth-note runs used to create fugues. In the “Cum sancto” movement, the fugue is counterposed against a stately theme which employs a much slower tempo. It is clear why this is dubbed "The Great Mass." We hope you can join us to experience this wonderful work.
