$6,565

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant object: a delicate paper sculpture of the ship Golden Venture, created by a Chinese refugee detained in the aftermath of the 1993 shipwreck off Rockaway Beach, Queens. Crafted from humble materials such as magazines and toilet paper, this extraordinary work was made while the artist awaited asylum, transforming hardship into creativity and giving physical form to one of the most powerful stories of modern immigration.

The sculpture has suffered extensive fire and water damage, leaving its masts, rigging, and railings softened, warped, and partially detached. Conservation treatment will include gentle surface cleaning, reshaping and stabilizing the structure, reattaching or reconstructing lost elements, and treating tide lines and staining caused by water exposure. The total restoration cost is $6,565, offering you the opportunity to fully underwrite the preservation of this extraordinary piece.

Your gift will directly restore a unique work born out of one of New York’s most compelling immigration stories, ensuring it can be displayed, studied, and appreciated for generations to come. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

$5,250

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant object: an intricate paper sculpture depicting a hexagonal pagoda surrounded by a miniature garden, created by a refugee from the Golden Venture while detained at York County Prison in the mid-1990s. Crafted entirely from folded and rolled paper, the sculpture weaves together symbols of faith and identity such as Chinese architectural motifs, lotus blossoms, and an American flag, reflecting both longing and hope during a time of confinement.

This fragile work suffered significant fire and water damage, leaving its delicate paper structure warped, stained, and partially collapsed. Conservation treatment will involve careful cleaning, humidification and reshaping of distorted areas, re-adhesion of loose and broken elements, reconstruction of missing base walls and railings, and stain reduction to restore its original color and form. The total cost of restoration is $5,250.

Your sponsorship offers the opportunity to fully underwrite the treatment of this unique work, ensuring that it can be displayed, studied, and preserved for future generations. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

$6,625

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant archive: a wooden drawer containing approximately 1,350 student record cards from boys who attended Public School 23, a cornerstone of Lower Manhattan’s immigrant and working-class communities in the early 20th century. These cards—some dating back to the 1880s—document academic progress, health examinations, and family details.

The drawer and its cards were damaged by fire, water, and years of acidic wood exposure. Conservation treatment will include surface cleaning of every card, mending tears and delaminated edges, stabilizing ink and paper, cleaning and repairing the wooden housing, and replacing metal clips and folders with archival-safe materials to ensure long-term preservation. The total cost of restoration is $6,625.

By underwriting this conservation, you will help ensure that this unique record set remains stable enough for display, research, and long-term preservation, allowing future generations to access an important chapter of New York immigrant education history. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

$5,375

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant archive: a wooden drawer filled with hundreds of early 20th-century student record cards from girls who attended Public School 23, a landmark institution that once served the immigrant and working-class communities of Manhattan’s Lower East Side and Chinatown. These records document generations of young students through academic histories, health records, and demographic details.

The drawer and its fragile paper cards were damaged by fire, water, and age-related deterioration. Conservation treatment will include cleaning and stabilizing the wooden drawer, repairing tears and creases in the student cards, removing corroded metal fasteners, and rehousing the entire set in archival materials to protect against further acid and moisture damage. The total cost of restoration is $5,375.

Your sponsorship will allow this unique record set to be stabilized, displayed, researched, and preserved for generations to come. Sponsor will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

Sponsor an Object: Chinatown Community Historical Photograph
$3,300

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant collection: approximately 375 black-and-white photographs documenting New York’s Chinatown and the wider Chinese American community from the 1940s through the 1980s. Many of these images were captured by photojournalist Emile Bocian and others from the collection of Betty Lee Sung, offering a vivid visual record of street life, parades, and everyday moments that shaped the Chinese American experience.

These irreplaceable prints suffered water and smoke damage from a fire, resulting in severe curling, surface grime, and photographs stuck to the paper folders in which they were stored. Conservation treatment will include humidification and flattening, careful separation of adhered photographs, removal of old adhesive labels and tape, and rehousing in archival-quality enclosures to ensure long-term stability. The total cost of restoration is $3,300 (for approximately 375 photographs).

Your gift offers the opportunity to fully underwrite this preservation endeavour and ensure this vital record of the Chinese-American community is stabilized, accessible, and celebrated for future generations. Sponsor will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

$3,500

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant object: an airman identification card issued to Maggie Gee by the Department of Commerce Civil Aeronautics Administration and her honorable discharge certificate dated December 20, 1944. These personal documents commemorate an extraordinary American story: Gee was one of only two Chinese American women pilots in the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II, breaking both gender and racial barriers to serve her country.

The ID card and discharge certificate are in fragile condition following water and fire exposure. Conservation efforts will include gentle surface cleaning, stabilization of delicate paper fibers and ink, remediation of water stains and fire damage, and rehousing the items in archival-quality enclosures designed for long-term preservation and display.

Your sponsorship will directly support the restoration of these rare and meaningful documents, ensuring that Maggie Gee’s legacy as a trailblazing aviator and patriot can be preserved, studied, and shared with future generations. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant object: a group photograph from circa 1944 of Shavey Lee’s Chinatown youth basketball team. Taken in a period when basketball served as both physical outlet and communal link in 1930s–40s Chinatown, the photo captures players who embodied connection, identity, and perseverance in their community.

The print is in urgent need of conservation: it is extremely brittle with substantial edge loss, severe staining and discoloration, prominent creases and tears, and water/fire damage. Treatment will include surface cleaning, realignment of tears and folds, backing reinforcement with Japanese paper and wheat-starch paste, and optional infill and in-paint of areas of loss. The total conservation cost is $3,750.

Your sponsorship will directly restore this remarkable image of Chinese American youth athletics and community life, allowing it to be stabilized, displayed, and appreciated for generations. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.

Sponsor an Object: Hand Iron and Trivet
$3,000

Starting bid

Be the champion for preserving a historically significant object: an antique iron and its accompanying trivet (iron stand), both ca. 19th to early 20th century, used in a Chinese hand-laundry in New York. These implements reflect the labor-intensive work of Chinese immigrant laundries: the heavy iron (weighing 5–9 lbs) was heated over a stovetop fire and required skill to operate without scorching garments, while the trivet enabled the iron to slide safely between ironing and resting.

The iron and trivet now require urgent conservation: the iron exhibits stress cracks and pervasive rust-oxide corrosion; the trivet shows heavy corrosion and material losses in the cast feet. Treatment will involve cleaning, stabilizing corrosion, consolidating cracked metal, applying protective coatings, and waxing to preserve the surface details. The total conservation cost is $3,000.

Your sponsorship enables this pairing of labor-history artifacts to be fully treated, preserved, and displayed. Sponsors will be acknowledged in MOCA’s object archive unless anonymity is preferred.
