Walk with us through the New Paltz Rural Cemetery to uncover the stories behind the names, dates, and unmarked ground. Guided by the Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Center (MWLC), this tour explores community, family legacies, and the ongoing work of sharing history and culture. Your participation helps us preserve and share community histories and build a more just and equitable society by deepening public understanding of the history of the Black community in the Hudson Valley. MWL Center believes that meaningful education, rooted in truth, memory, and scholarship, has the power to cultivate empathy, inclusivity, and collective accountability. Central to this work is honoring the lives, labor, and leadership of Black people whose contributions have too often been marginalized or erased. Join us to learn more about the lives and legacies of the first Black community members buried in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery including Ann Oliver and Jacob Wynkoop. (MWLC has begun the process to rehabilitate Ann Oliver's home, which was built by Jacob Wynkoop. When complete the Ann Oliver House will be the headquarters of the MWL Center.)
