About the Collection
My Night in the Planetarium is a true story from the author’s childhood. A picture book for younger kids set in 1976 at the height of the New Order, it is a story about Indonesia, colonialism, authoritarianism, and the role of free speech, art, and resistance in creating change.
M is for Movement is a fictionalized memoir for middle grade readers. A highly illustrated, easy to read chapter book, it follows the main character through their adventures against the backdrop of the early years of the New Order, through Reformasi.
Especially in these times, in both the US and Indonesia, children are aware that not everything is as we all wish it to be. These stories both engage them, and give them a sense of agency even when times may be hard.

About the Artwork
The director highlights a theme that shows how human beings are just as fragile as the flies around us. Because flies are small and seem insignificant, we feel powerful in comparison. It leads to an attitude that can easily justify violence. This reflects the power dynamic that humans find satisfying. The protagonist experiences this same treatment. To her peers, she is a nuisance. To her parents, she is an inconvenience. But she forms an unexpected bond with a fly that stays by her side. Their connection represents empathy. The fly sees her as a companion, while the humans around her see her only as someone “taking up space.”

About the Artwork
This photo series explores the experience of internal alchemy—the skillful yet chaotic catharsis that transforms mud into light, and shame into belonging. Using digital photography in a ceremonial context, I consensually witnessed and guided a dear friend into a lotus pond where I spent my childhood, at the foothills of Mt. Batukaru in the village of Wonyaga Gede. These works give voice to the repression of feminine expression and the often-silenced cycles of transformation within Southeast Asian culture. They speak to the mysterious alchemy of the Body and the self-expression of the feminine—forces that are too often feared and alienated in dominant cultural narratives. This project became an embodied remedy—an offering of resistance and healing in response to the internalized norms surrounding femininity, selfhood, and change.
About the Artist
Kahayag is a multidisciplinary artist, grassroots agrarian organizer, and birth doula whose work explores the intersections of spirit, tradition, feminine power, and geopolitical forces. Rooted in the landscapes of Indonesia—specifically Jawa Barat and Bali, as well as the Philippines—her practice is informed by both the complexity of diasporic identity and the tension between modernity and ancestral knowledge. Kahayag’s art is the material debris of their lived experience and self study in the realms of soul, contradictions, and the socio-political currents that shape her relationship to self, land, and place. Her work spans photography, installation, film, and the art of everyday life.
