California Propositions: Retire or keep them?Saturday, November 7 10:30am-12pm Palo Alto or Mountain View (Exact location TBD)Optional hike begins at 9:30am. About half the states in our country have ballot initiative referendum mechanisms, but California is the indisputable leader in putting such measures directly before the voters through its proposition system. In the upcoming November elections, we have 14 propositions—that’s right, 14! (Has anyone tried to make sense of the conflicting propositions and the pro/con arguments in the Voter Information Guide?) Has what seems to be a well-intentioned process originally begun in 1911 gone amok? Or are propositions an effective way for California voters to more directly express their views on critical issues? In the aftermath of the midterm elections, we’ll examine the case for and against direct ballot measures. We’ll also look at possible reforms to our current system in California. Pre-reads will be forthcoming. Save the date for what promises to be a lively discussion on the topic! Food and beverages available for purchase at venue.
