Purchase a label for one or all of the Osage Orange Trees on the property. There are currently 3 located within the arboretum. These trees were planted in 2012 by Dr. John Abbuhl.

The Osage Nation and other Indigenous peoples prized the flexible, strong wood for making superior archery bows. Pioneers used the durable wood for fence posts, wagon wheel rims, and railway ties because of it's rot resistant characteristics.

There are so many amazing Sweet Gum Trees located throughout the arboretum. The All-Purpose Swamp and Russian Pond is where you might see most of them. These native trees feature a star shaped leaf that turns a beautiful red color in the Fall.

There are ONLY 3 known native Black Birch trees on the property, primarily in the backwoods along Woodland Way. Unlike white birches, these trees have smooth dark-brown to black bark. Leaves turn a brilliant golden-yellow in the fall and crushed twigs and leaves release a fragrant wintergreen scent.

This Yellow Birch located in the Backwoods near our property line is growing out of an old decomposed stump from another tree. It was planted in 2012 by Dr. John Abbuhl. There are only a few Yellow Birch Trees on the property and are more commonly found in the Adirondacks. This tree seems happy in the spot that Dr. Abbuhl picked for it.

One of the arboretum's most beloved spots, Metasequoia Field is centrally located within the arboretum and is home to one of the first trees Dr. Abbuhl ever planted, the Metasequoia, Dawn Redwood in 1968. This tree is a deciduous conifer and turns a beautiful copper color in the Fall before loosing all of its needles.

Magnolia Field is the largest and one of the most stunning areas of the arboretum. With over 80 species of Magnolia Trees, this field is bursting with color in Mid-May. Over 3,000 people visit the arboretum annually and this is one of our busiest areas all year long.

Japanese Hill is one of the most picturesque places in the arboretum. A hill that is surrounded by Japanese Maples and centered around the beautiful Fuji Weeping Cherry Tree.

Pawpaw Grove began with a few trees that Dr. Abbuhl planted beginning in 1997 through 2005. Since then, these understory trees have flourished and the arboretum now has an entire grove of pawpaws. This trees produces the largest fruit grown in North America. The pawpaw is an edible fruit that tastes like a cross between a mango and banana. These trees require cross-pollination from a second, genetically different tree because its flowers are not reliably self-fertile; pollinated by beetles and flies rather than bees.

This grove of pawpaws has become infamous in the Capital Region- with fruit from the grove being distributed to Nine Pin Cider for hard cider collaborations and the NY Pawpaw Festival.

There are ONLY 5 native Sugar Maple trees on the property, primarily in the backwoods along hilly areas. The arboretum has been planting Sugar Maple Trees in our woods, however these are our 5 largest.

This Seven Son's Tree was planted in 1999 by Dr. Abbuhl and is located near the Chinese Strip. A small tree, native to China, this ornamental produces a fragrant, jasmine-scented white flower clusters in late summer.

Thanks to our partners with the Davey Tree Expert Company, we have been able to treat both surviving ash and elm trees on the property. These are the only tree treatments that occur at the arboretum and occur for the purpose of research and maintaining endangered tree species. This application is localized and will occur on the 1 remaining Elm Tree and 4 remaining Ash Trees.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 to cover these expenses which include the treatment and a licensed applicator.

This area of the Arboretum is home to over a dozen native Swamp White Oak Trees giving it the name of Swamp White Oak Grove. This area is also home to several Bald Cypress Trees planted by Dr. John Abbuhl in 2005.

Swamp White Oak Trees seem to love it at the arboretum and over the years our Horticulture Committee has noticed more and more coming up on the property.

These native trees do well in moist or wet soils and have a peeling bark. There leaves turn an orange brown in the Fall.

This Northern Spicebush near pawpaw Grove is in need a of a label. Planted in 2003 by Dr. John Abbuhl this shrub is one of our most impressive Spicebush shrubs on the property.

This area of the arboretum is home to an extraordinary number of tree species from Sweet Gum, Bald Cypress, Larch, Winterberry and Willow Trees. One of the most colorful areas in the Fall at the arboretum this section is often used by our School field Trips and other educational groups because of its color and fun network of boardwalks.

Built by Dr. Abbuhl and located in our Founder's Garden, this Bridge has become a focal point of the arboretum. From engagements, to weddings to our Winter Light Walk this high traffic bridge arches over the Founder's Pond which is home to beautiful water lily's. This bridge is framed by beautiful oak and tulip trees in the Fall.

Located in Pawpaw Grove, this amazing Black Gum Tree was planted in 1998 by Dr. John Abbuhl. This tree turns a fire engine red color in the Fall.

This Flowering Dogwood located in the backwoods near Russian Pond is native (Dr. Abbuhl did not plant this tree). The Flowering Dogwood, is one of eastern North America’s most beloved and recognizable native trees, renowned for its spectacular spring display of pristine white flowers that tell us that the arrival of warmer weather is near.

Located in the backwoods, this bench rests at the base of a large white pine. A meeting point and convergence of trails, this spot is perfect for a moment of solitude in the woods.
