Founded by influential early Florida settlers, the parish played a significant role in shaping the social, religious, and civic life of the community. Hear the stories of St. John&rsquo;s founding families, whose legacies remain visible throughout Tallahassee today. Proctor will also examine the history of St. John&rsquo;s Episcopal Church Cemetery established in the early years of Florida&rsquo;s capital city. With burial records dating to 1840 and some grave markers from the 1830s, the cemetery stands among Florida&rsquo;s oldest burial sites -offering a unique window into the people and events that shaped Tallahassee and early Florida. ABOUT OUR SPEAKERDr. David Proctor is a retired History Professor and former Chair of History and Anthropology at Tallahassee State College. A Tallahassee native, he earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in History from Florida State University and devoted more than 30 years to teaching, academic leadership, and student success. Dr. Proctor is a three-time president of the Florida Conference of Historians, a published Civil War scholar, and a longtime coach of award-winning Brain Bowl teams. He remains active in promoting history and civic literacy throughout Florida. In his free time, he enjoys reading, visiting historic sites, and spending time outdoors.
