Did you know that Connecticut is among the top 3 states with the highest costs for nursing home and long-term care? That’s why it is so important to do your due diligence and protect everything that you have worked so hard for – and if possible – to do so while remaining in the comfort of your home! In this program, we will help you better understand how to avoid putting your hard earned assets at risk in a way that can best position you to stay in your own home and age in place. Specifically, you’ll learn about Medicaid and other public benefit programs the state has to offer as well as strategies that married or single people can use to protect their assets. All students will receive an informational booklet about long-term care planning crafted by our estate planning and elder law firm.

This session will focus on important estate planning documents like Wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, trusts, beneficiary designations, and the purpose and powers included in each. Also, learn about what happens if you don’t have a Will, considerations for choosing your power of attorney and health care agents, and some common estate planning mistakes that you will want to avoid. Become a presence of healing, wisdom, and loving-kindness for yourself and others through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to feelings, thoughts, and our physical sense experiences without judgment. We let them arise and let them go without holding on to or fighting them. Mindfulness makes it easier to release unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior so we can respond to situations, other people, and ourselves with greater skill, compassion, and wisdom. Equanimity develops and we can stop chasing after pleasure and running from pain. Clinical studies have shown that the practice of mindfulness can reduce stress, anxiety, pain, depression, insomnia, and high blood pressure. This class is an opportunity to practice the meditation and learn about Buddhist psychology in a supportive group. The course will not cover Buddhist religion.
