It also functions as a natural breakwater that buffers downtown Charleston on its northeastern side (Cooper River side of Charleston) from ship wake and storm wave impact during major storms. Castle Pinckney, located on the southern tip of the island, dates to 1809 and is a magnificent example of a Second System American coastal fortification. Both Shutes Folly and Castle Pinckney are endangered because of rising water levels in the harbor and the erosion from channel realignment and harbor deepening since the 1950s. Castle Pinckney is owned by the Castle Pinckney Historical Preservation Society (CPHPS), a South Carolina non-profit 501(c)(3). CPHPS is in the process of raising public and private funds to preserve the island and castle. Island restoration plans include a constructed living shoreline and saltwater marsh restoration, including thin layer replacement of sediment that has been lost to erosion. Richard P. Moore is the President of CPHPS.
