Starting Sept 2 Strong Is More Important Than Thin For years, women were taught to focus on being thin and to rely heavily on cardio. We now know that building and maintaining muscle may be far more important to long-term health than simply being thin. Muscle is not just about appearance. It is essential for metabolism, blood-sugar control, bone strength, cardiovascular health, mobility, longevity, and independence as we age. Research has found that women who strength train have been associated with: * ~30% lower risk of cardiovascular death* ~19% lower risk of death from any cause* ~17% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes in research on muscle-strengthening activity Cardio is still important&mdash;but cardio alone is not enough. We need resistance training to preserve the muscle, strength, and function that naturally decline with age. The goal shouldn&rsquo;t simply be to weigh less. The goal is to be strong enough to carry groceries, climb stairs, get off the floor, protect our bones, recover from illness, and remain independent well into our 70s, 80s, and beyond. For women, the conversation is changing from &ldquo;How thin can I be?&rdquo; to &ldquo;How strong can I stay?&rdquo; Muscle is an investment in longevity and self-reliance.
