Site-Specific Dances invites you to a party at the iconic Stonewall Inn, benefitting our newest collaborative performance project, Love Letters: Cage to Cunningham. This project has already received support from the O’Donnell Green Foundation for Music and Dance as well as a prestigious William P. Rayner Artist Residency at Guild Hall of East Hampton. Love Letters will be about 75% completed by the end of 2025. Your attendance supports our NYC-based artists for their talents and contributions to artmaking in our great city.  Love Letters: Cage to Cunningham is an evening-length dance and media performance by Site-Specific Dances and inspired by Love, Icebox, the recently published letters from composer John Cage to choreographer Merce Cunningham. These letters reveal, for the first time, the interwoven nature of Cage and Cunningham’s artistic and personal lives.  While in their work together John and Merce were known for rejecting emotion and narrative, the letters contain moments of flirtation, humor, insecurity, joy, arousal, and jealousy, emotions specific to the letters but also universal to human experiences of love and longing. The letters reveal a hidden chapter of queer history. In bringing these letters to the stage, we reclaim an erased tenderness while celebrating the radical collaborative imagination that fueled one of the most influential queer creative partnerships in modern art.
