Please register below to help us prepare a calm, comfortable space for everyone. The theme of this retreat: What Does This Mind Need? The Art of Discernment in Meditation. When difficulty arises in meditation—or in our lives—we can easily assume that there is one right way to respond: stay with it, let it go, calm down, investigate, try harder. But Buddhist practice offers a much richer and more discerning approach. Drawing on teachings including the Seven Factors of Awakening and the Four Right Efforts, this practice day will explore how we can learn to recognize what the mind and body need in any particular moment. When might we need to steady and soothe ourselves? When might we need more energy or curiosity? When is it helpful to turn towards a difficult experience, and when might we be inadvertently feeding it?Through meditation, embodied practice, reflection and discussion, we will explore how practice can become less about applying the “right” technique and more about developing a sensitive, responsive relationship with our own experience. The day will include periods of sitting and walking meditation and is suitable for people with some experience of meditation. There will be some refreshments but do bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy eating meditation during the lunch break. About our teacherPadmadharini is an ordained member of the Triratna Buddhist Order and an experienced meditation and Dharma teacher. She is also a mindfulness educator, coach and chaplain working in healthcare, where she supports staff experiencing stress, anxiety and the emotional demands of clinical work. Her teaching brings together Buddhist practice, contemporary psychology and an embodied understanding of how we meet difficult experience.
