A homeschooler for more than ten years and a mother of two Schola students, Julie Kulick is a portrait artist based in Palmyra, Virginia. Julie works in photorealism, using her skills to capture a photo in as much detail as possible, while offering the viewer the opportunity to experience the image through a new medium, either painting or drawing.  Working from photographs allows the ability to leave a piece and come back to it frequently, which is helpful as Julie also works hard as a homeschooling mom. 

She has created illustrations for the US Forest Service, the Wilderness Conservancy at Mountain Lake, as well as numerous private commissions.  She earned her BFA from JMU and studied Art and Art History with the British Institute of Florence in Italy.

Before the Schola was a classical hybrid school for elementary and middle schoolers, it was a tiny preschool learning pod for six kids in someone's basement and back yard. Two of those preschoolers were the children of the owners of First Free Coffee Bar.

First Free is owned and run by a husband and wife, fueled by the great American spirit, and infused with love for family, faith, and freedom. Their shop was born out of a yearning for liberty, laughter, integrity, creativity, and camaraderie. Mrs. Talia Davis was homeschooled herself and is our Art Teacher. This year she has taught our students so much about perspective, color, figure drawing, drawing from nature, watercolor techniques and more. Her lessons were a highlight of the week for our students.

Our lovely headmistress, Dr. Jocelyn Moore, is a lover of ancient languages, a homeschooled student, and a watercolorist—among many things.

Not only do the surrounding vineyards provide beautiful space for our families to gather and spend time in community but one of our math teachers, Mrs. Jooste, is married to the assistant winemaker at one of the most loved vineyards around.

Mr. Jooste has graciously donated a case from his cellar to support our school.

One Schola family found this mid century piece at a local thrift shop a number of years ago and purchased it with the idea that it might benefit a school one day--the simplicity of form seeming perhaps appealing in a child's setting.

Allow this beautiful piece to invite Mary and Jesus into your home chapel, living room or nursery. The Madonna and Child is painted by an artist that was local to Charlottesville (NAME) in the 1960s-80s.

One of our founding parents, Isobel Eckrosh, has been enormously generous with her time and talents in helping us establish our school these past two years.
