6th-12th grade students work with an accomplished Science Coach all year to conduct advanced research in a subject area of interest to them. &nbsp;The project is entered into at least one competition and our Coach helps students with competition registration/paperwork/preparation. Student and Coach meetings begin mid-August, at a time/date convenient for them.&nbsp;This is a year-long virtual program offered to students who have no advanced research coach/opportunity available at their school. This course features:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Student Curriculum and activities provided in the Canvas learning management system, including a mobile app.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Students can complete the online lessons and engage in one-on-one communication with the Coach to assist them as they develop/conduct/compete&nbsp;with their ORIGINAL research project. The instruction focuses on research methodology regardless of the specific research focus.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Lessons support students&rsquo; development of their original research projects. Unlike many programs that have students work with a mentor on the mentor&#39;s research, in Science Coach Virtual, students will develop their OWN research plan/procedure/project.</li></ul>&nbsp;Science Coach Virtual Components:<ol fr-original-style="" style="width: 100%; box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Students have access to our online curriculum (in Canvas) for step-by-step guidance as well as recorded classes. Oversight of student progress with support from the parent/adult in charge is required for 6th-9th grade students.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Students work directly with the Coach. &nbsp;This Coach has years of research competition experience with winners at the regional, national and international levels.<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Coaching can start at any time and would not have to wait till July to start.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Working to complete a research project that is entered into competitions is the main goal. If you have additional coaching hours available, you can use them to work toward getting your research published.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">You will meet with the Coach at a time and in a manner convenient for you. &nbsp;Instead of having one set &#39;time&#39; for all students, we are making it more flexible and you would reach out to your Coach when you have questions or have completed the goal set in your previous meeting. &nbsp;This may be in email, phone, text or virtual meetings. The Coach will work with you in a structured manner as an individual.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Each student receives 4 hours of support a month for 10 months = 40 hours. &nbsp;We measure in increments of 15 minutes. &nbsp;We do whatever it takes to help students, but have had to put some guardrails around the support for people who didn&#39;t understand that the student needs to work independently, and the Coach is there to coach...not make the student do the project. &nbsp;There may be, at the Coach&rsquo;s discretion, group sessions that do not count against any individual time. This is often necessary near competition registration time or just prior to competitions for students to practice giving their presentation.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">The 40 hours is a bank of time that can be used in any time frame from now until May 31st. We have moved to this structure because our experience has taught us that most students valued 15-30 minutes of dedicated weekly time over an hour of group time where they had to sit and wait for their turn for their individual questions. If you &#39;run&#39; out of time and wish to purchase more, we can discuss this as you get close to the limit. &nbsp;Normally, the pre-competition timeframe is the most labor-intensive.</li></ul></li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Students do ORIGINAL research - not something a mentor tells them to do. This is not easy and requires students who wish to differentiate their college applications to put in the time it takes to do original research. &nbsp;With the help of their Coach, students come up with their own research question, develop procedures, conduct the research and complete a poster/presentation that is entered into competitions.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Bioscience lab access is available in the St. Louis area and a few other locations across the USA. Additional lab access is possible through an acquired mentor. Our insurance policy covers students in other labs and this is often the reason students are allowed access to other labs. Depending on the research topic, lab access is not guaranteed.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Supplies for your research are your responsibility. &nbsp;We have some free supplies that may meet your needs and we will gladly provide them. &nbsp;Anything not in our free inventory sheet that you want us to purchase for you, will need to be pre-paid. &nbsp;Any pre-paid supply funding that is not used will be returned at the end of the year.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Students are responsible for any fees associated with entering competitions. Most fees are $10-$50/competition with many being free.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">We help you find a mentor/subject matter expert. &nbsp;While the Coach may have the expertise needed, additional mentors/subject matter experts may be desired. Mentors are not guaranteed and require student initiative.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">We offer dual enrollment opportunities with Missouri Southern State University for 3 credit hours of a 297 level Biology college credit. &nbsp;The cost is $180 and the credits transfer according to the rules of the institution you attend - but usually transfer well since it is a 297 level class!</li></ol>
